The Role of Oxygen Sensors

The first line of defense in your vehicle's performance is the Oxygen Sensor (O2 sensor). Modern vehicles rely on these sensors to monitor the exhaust gases.

Your car computer relies on data from two specific points:

Pre-Converter: Measures the exhaust coming right out of the engine.
Post-Converter: Measures the exhaust after it has passed through the catalytic converter.

These sensors act as the "eyes" of your engine management system. They tell the computer exactly how much oxygen is left in the exhaust, allowing the car to adjust the air-fuel mixture in real-time.

The Danger of Running "Rich" or "Lean"

What Transmission Should You Use for an LS Swap?

One of the most common questions we get during LS swap projects is:

“What transmission should I use?”

And the answer is — it depends on the vehicle and the LS engine you’re dropping in.

-For Silverado Pickup Trucks

If you’re working on a Silverado and planning to run a 4.8L or 5.3L LS engine, you can usually stick with the stock 4L60 transmission. It’ll handle the power just fine in most daily driving setups.

However, if you're upgrading to a 6.0L or 6.2L LS, we strongly recommend switching to a 4L80 transmission. Pair it with a quality torque converter to handle the extra power and torque. Otherwise, you risk blowing up that 4L60 — and nobody wants that.

- For Camaros

Camaros are usually a bit more forgiving. Most newer models come with 4L80, 6L80, or even 10L80 transmissions from the factory. These are stronger units that can typically handle larger LS engines with minimal modification.

- Bottom Line

For trucks especially:

Ditch the 4L60, and go with a 4L80 if you're running anything bigger than a 5.3. It's the safer bet for long-term reliability and performance.

Long answer: It’s a slippery slope—and here’s why.

Technically speaking, with enough time, tools, and know-how, you can drop an LS engine into almost any vehicle. But just because you can doesn’t always mean you should—at least not without understanding what’s involved. It’s not as simple as bolting it in and turning the key.

-It All Comes Down to Fabrication

Swapping in an LS often requires extensive fabrication, custom mounts, drivetrain adjustments, and sometimes even major frame modifications. Then there's the wiring—especially if you're dealing with a newer LS motor with fuel injection and electronic management systems. That’s where things can get really complex, really fast.

-Know Your Platform

Some vehicles are a lot more LS-swap-friendly than others. Unsurprisingly, GM products—especially ones that originally came with small-blocks—are much more straightforward. Old Camaros, Chevelles, Novas, and similar classics? Those are solid platforms, and the aftermarket support is strong.

But once you step outside of that zone—whether it’s a Ford, Mopar, import, or something totally off the wall—you’re going to be in full custom territory.

So, Can We Do It ? Absolutely .

Old Camaros? Check.

Old Chevelles? Check.

Any old vehicle? Honestly, yeah.

If you’re working on a Chevy Silverado like the one we’ve got in the shop today, the answer is yes — LS swaps are actually pretty easy. These trucks were built with LS engines in mind. Sure, some Silverados come with V6s from the factory, but with just a few changes — motor mounts, a couple of exhaust manifolds, a new computer and wiring harness — you can drop an LS right in without too much trouble.

Lots of oil changes, check for leaks, check for bad hoses. Recommend a transmission flush every three to four years. If you take care of these items, we can prevent having issues in the future.
